Our mission is to promote a healthy school culture and overall wellness program by providing nutritious eating choices and regular physical activity, in order to optimize academic performance and set a foundation for positive life-long decision-making.
The link between wellness and academic success is often ignored in schools across the country. We would like to put more emphasis on that link here at Twain. Sponsored by the PTO, the Wellness Committee formed in the fall of 2006. Since its inception the committee has worked on the following initiatives:
- Sponsored educational theatre workshops for kindergarten through third grade through Kaiser Permanente
- Provided nutrition education stations at field day
- Introduced brain gym activities at the start of the school day
- Promoted "Recess before lunch"
- Sponsored and put on the 9Health Fair "In the Classroom"
- Held focus luncheons with teachers and other staff to gain input on wellness issues at school
- Promoted healthy reward systems in the classroom
- Promoted healthier celebrations in the classroom
- Joined with parents from other LPS elementary schools to form the LPS Parent Wellness committee to work on wellness issues at the district level
- Published numerous "Food for Thought" articles in the school newsletter about important nutrition topics
- Sponsored TV Turnoff Week
The Wellness Committee is always looking for interested parents to help with initiatives such as these. For more information, please contact Carol Muller at 303-972-7882 or carolmuller@msn.com.
