The Arapahoe Library District recently introduced free, online tutorial help called "Homework Help" for students in 4th-12th grades. Students may log on for a live 20-minute session at selected libraries or log on remotely from home.
"Homework Help" can be found on the library district's website at www.arapahoelibraries.org
. Once logged in, students are asked to give their grade level and to choose a subject. Assistance is available in math, language arts, science and social studies. Students just click on "go": and chat live with a tutor who specializes in a specific subject area. The tutor is available for chatting online and can link students to web pages that serve as additional resources. "Homework Help" also features a white board where students can draw geometry problems or diagram sentences by using a mouse. When the student is finished, the work can be printed for future reference.
"Homework Help" is available 35 hours per week: Sunday-Thursday, from 4-10 p.m., and Saturday, from noon-5 p.m. Students can connect from home, school, Koelbel main library, or at Smoky Hill, Glendale, or Sheridan branches. "Homework Help" is available at all public internet terminals in designated libraries. Most sessions run for 20 minutes, although the tutor will stay online with the student if the tutor determines that more assistance is needed, or it the student requests more help.
The tutors are teachers, college professors, and graduate students, connected with the Princeton Review and they are specially trained in using online classrooms by Tutor.com. They must pass a 7-year criminal background check to provide the extra level of security for the Arapahoe Library District's young patrons.
